Anambra guber: Catholic bishops declare one-month prayers over insecurity

NVorried by the spate of violent attacks and killings ahead of Anambra governorship election, Catholic bishops in Anambra State have declared one-month special prayers for divine intervention and success of the polls.

In a release signed by the Metropolitan Archbishop of Onitsha, Most Rev. Valerian Okeke , the bishops said the special prayers would last from October I,to October 30,2021.

Describing the situation as extraordinary times that require extraordinary prayers and actions, the bishops urged allmen and women of goodwill to fervently pray forpeace. The clerics said the prayers would take the form of a special October Devotion, asking the intervention and intercession of “Our Blessed Mother Mary and St. Joseph who are great intercessors on our behalf before God especially during this election.”

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has threatened to declare a state of emergency if the security situation in Anambra state does not improve. The Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami stated this while fielding questions from State House correspondents
at the end of the virtual Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The Minister said that government has the responsibility to sustain the democratic order and will do the
needful in terms of ensuring that the election holds.

He, however, said that nobody should rule out any possibility including the declaration of a state of
emergency in the state.
