Cleric urges new FUTO VC to entrench righteousness, fear of God

Abridged Commentary on the First Female Vice Chancellor of FUTO

The new Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Prof. Mrs. Nnenna Nnannaya Oti has been urged to entrench righteousness and fear of God in her administration.

Rev. Dr. Godwin Adaka, Chaplain, All Saints’ Chapel FUTO, gave this charge during the inaugural thanksgiving service the chapel organized in Prof. Oti’s honour as the 8th substantive Vice-Chancellor of the university, held at All Saints’ Chapel FUTO, July 11.

In his sermon, Rev. Adaka reminded the new VC of the event that happened in 2001, when she started a prayer cell consisting of him (Rev. Adaka) and some professors in the university. He recalled that two prayer points were raised at that time – righteousness will rule in FUTO and FUTO will be among the Committee of Universities in Nigeria and the world.

He said God has answered those prayers by bringing Prof. Mrs. Nnenna Oti to the seat and he believed that within 5 years of her tenure, FUTO will begin to enjoy 24 hours light and other amenities, people due for promotion will go for promotion because righteousness must rule.

Rev. Adaka made reference to Our Lord’s Prayer, “Let thy kingdom come,” explaining that this prayer doesn’t mean food, drink, money and cars, rather the kingdom of God is righteousness, peace and joy and the reason we don’t have peace and joy in Nigeria is because we don’t have righteousness, which is living to please God.”

He advised the new VC to let the peace of God be with her even though some people will try to ruffle her, through petitions and other obstacles she might face in her tenure but she should let the peace of God guide her.

“For God to direct you, you need to always be in his presence through prayer, therefore Ma, don’t be too busy to forget prayer,” he said.

Turning to the congregation, he equally enjoined them to pray everyday “so that his kingdom will come, so that righteousness, peace and joy will reign in FUTO.”

In her remark during the service, Prof. Mrs. Oti said that she is indeed speechless and lack words to describe her gratitude to the God who made this possible.

She thanked everybody including the former VCs present, the Governing Council, her relatives from Afikpo in Ebonyi State, the choir, the pastors and priests, FUTO Women Association, UNN Alumni etc.

She concluded her speech by pledging to leave a memory at All Saint’s Church, stating that she and her family will build a Rectory for the Chaplaincy so the chaplain won’t need to be coming in from Town to hold service at the chapel. She also encouraged friends and well-wishers to support her in realizing the project.

In attendance at the thanksgiving service included the immediate past VC, Prof. Francis Eze, former VC, Prof. C.C. Asiabaka, Engr. Prof. G.I. Nwadikom, DVC (Academic), Prof. Clifford Madubuko Agu, DVC (Admin), Prof. Emeka C. Oguzie – DVC (Research Development & Innovation), principal officers, Head of Departments, Dr. Ogbonnia Ibe-Enwo – Rector, Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic Uwana, Rev. Fr. Professor and Deaconess Chima Mmadubuike – Methodist Church Cathedral Owerri, Venerable Kelechi Okere – Chaplain Anglican Chapel of Light FUTO, members of Imo State House of Assembly, UNN Alumni, lecturers, students, friends and well-wishers.
