There are many self-acclaimed prophets in Nigeria, who prophesy what the leadership and the congregation want to hear; what will please them and not what will annoy them.
The Administrator of Maria Assumpta Cathedral Parish Owerri, Rev. Fr. Dr. Clement Odoemena revealed this in his homily on Sunday, July 11.
These self-acclaimed prophets are after what they will gain, what politicians call stomach infrastructure, because to such prophets, prophecy is business; economic venture.
Fr. Odoemena, who was reflecting on the First Reading (Amos 7:12-15), the conversation between Amaziah, priest of Bethel and Amos. Amaziah had told Amos: “O seer, go, flee away to the land of Judah, and eat bread there, and prophesy there; but never again prophesy at Bethel, for it is the king’s sanctuary…”
The Administrator regretted that many people don’t like priests who question their way of life, who tell them the truth.
He also observed that some Christians come to church to confuse others, to create disunity and confusion like Amaziah.
“There are those who work for the progress of the church; there are also those who, not only don’t work for the good of the church but discourage those who are working for the church,” he added.
He reminded Catholics that we are all called to work for God, to serve Him, regretting that some would rather prefer to work for Satan, to serve him.
Fr. Odoemena further reminded the congregation that there is reward for every action on earth. He said that life is full of choices and advised Christians to think about the choices they make and their consequences because one reaps what one sows.”
He advised those who work for Satan to turn a new leaf, to return to God now because God doesn’t want you to perish.
The Administrator appealed to parents to always show good example and live lifestyle worthy of emulation.
“If you cannot control your family, you cannot control the family of God; a bad mother in the family is a bad mother in the church and so is a father.”
